One girl under 5 (Francis), two between 5 and 9 (Nancy and Susanna) and two between 10 and 15 (Mary and... ?), one between 15 and 20 (?) and one between 30 and 40 (wife Letty). Sons Jonathan and Jackson also appear on the census with their families.

In 1860, he is 52 and Letty is 45. He works as a laborer. The children still living with them are his daughters Nancy, 18, Susanna, 16, Francis, 12, and Elzada, 8. Sons John and James live nearby with their families.

In 1860, he is 60 and Lettie is 37. They live in Wayne with son Newton, 7. Their daughter Permelia and her husband and children live nearby. Valentine works as a wagon maker.
