Applied for a passport in Palermo on July 7, 1900 (issued July 10, 1900). Obtained citizenship in Brooklyn on August 3, 1899. Occupation: grocer. Arrived in Naples on the SS Ems on May 24, 1900, lived in Mazzarra since May 24, and has been temporarily residing in Palermo until he leaves in two weeks. He is 30, 5’4 1/2” with a low forehead, brown eyes, large nose, medium mouth, small chin, dark brown hair, dark complexion and an oval face. The witness who testifies as to his identity is Giuseppe Sprampinot?, Alla Casa Nuove, Vicolo dello Madonna, N. 9, Palermo.
122Returned August 6, 1900 aboard the SS Aller with his new wife, Maria Piccolo, his brother Tommaso, 33, and his new wife Carmela D’Amico, 16, and their cousin Giuseppe Pietrafitta, 30. Giuseppe, 30, and Maria, 19, are listed as citizens. The men are all married, the wives are listed as single. They are all farmers, heading to Giuseppe’s at 183 Elizabeth.
In 1910, he was 37 and lived at 170 Elizabeth St with his wife Maria (28) and daughters Carmela (4), Marianina (3), and Candida (1 1/12). They have been married 10 years, and 3 of 5 children are living. He is naturalized and says he emigrated in 1895. He is a driver with his own wagon.
124 In 1920, lived at 284 Elizabeth St. (as Joseph, 49) with his wife Mary (38), and daughters Carmela (14), Mary (12), Candida (11), Concetta (8, name written as Conjetta), Frances (6), and Jennie (4 months). He says he rents(?), and that he emigrated in 1890 and was naturalized in 1899. He is a poulterer and owns his business.
125In 1930, as Joseph Livoti (58), lived at 288 Elizabeth Street with wife Mary (47) and daughters Marion (22), Candida (19), Concetta (17), Francis (15), Jennie (10), and his son-in-law Carmelo (27) and daughter Carmela (24). He says he rents; doesn’t provide a number. He has been married since he was 28 and she was 18. All his children were born in New York. He arrived in 1896 and his wife in 1900, and they are naturalized. His occupation is chicken market, the industry is dealer. Carmelo and Carmela Inglima were married when he was 26 and she was 23. Carmelo is also a dealer in chicken markets.

127In 1940, he was 70 and a widower living at 156 Clark Street in Richmond on Staten Island, where he had also lived in 1935. He was born in Italy and was naturalized. He owned his house, which was valued at $11,000, and lived there with his New York-born daughters Candida, 31, and Giovanna, 20, and a black servant, Lilly Matthews, who was 50, married, and had been born in North Carolina. Giuseppe, Candida, and Giovanna had all completed 8th grade, and Mrs. Matthews had completed 5th grade. Giuseppe, Candida, and Mrs. Matthews all worked: Giuseppe worked for himself as the manager of a real estate company, Candida was the unpaid assistant manager, and Mrs. Matthews worked for the family, earning $240. Giuseppe and Candida did not earn an income, but had another income source.

His death was reported by his daughter, Carmela Inglima, who lived at 170 Elizabeth Street. His birthdate was listed as August 31, 1873 in the town of Messina in the province of Messina. He is widowed (sic) and his occupation is real estate. His father’s name is given as Filipponeri and his mother’s as Carmela Pietrafita. He has lived in New York for 46 years. The doctor, Jacob Silverman, started attending him from June 1, 1941 to the date of his death.
