Born in Borgo San Leone, his father Cristoforo was listed as a merchant, 25, and his mother 22. He was baptized in Santa Maria dell’Arco.
In 1897, as a 49-year-old stonecutter on his way to Boston, Giuseppe LaManna arrives in New York. He can read and write, bought his own ticket, has never been to the US, and has $9 on him. He is going to see Placido Sergi at 123 North Street, Boston.
On June 21, 1901, 50-year-old Pasquale LaManna and his son 17-year-old Giuseppe LaManna (names reversed), both sculptors, arrive on the Vincenzo Florio from Naples. ‘Pasquale’ has been to the US before, in 1897 in New York. They are on their way to 5 North Square in Boston to see their son- and brother-in-law, G? Militello.
On March 20, 1903, Giuseppe LaManna files a Declaration of Intent in the circuit court, Massachusetts district. He gives his birthdate as March 9, 1848 in Messina. He is 55, “an Alien, and a free White person,“ and a stone cutter in Boston. He says he arrived in the US in New York on March 20, 1898.
