He emigrated in 1899, she in 1877. They both speak English. He works as a dress manufacturer in the children’s dresses industry. (?) He has been naturalized. Also living at this address are his uncle Giuseppe, 62, and aunt Maria, 55, who have been married 29 years; widowed cousin Giovanna, 27, and her daughters Lilla, 4, and Maria, 3; and cousins Pasquale, 25 and Lilla, 15. Giuseppe LaManna arrived in 1900 and has filed papers. He works as a stone cutter in a stone yard. Giovanna LaManna works as a dress manufacturer in the children’s dress industry and arrived in 1904 with mother Maria and sisters Rosa and Lilla. Pasquale arrived in 1902 and is an alien. He works as a stone cutter in a stone yard. Lilla works as an operator at the children’s dress company. Newlyweds Giuseppe Visalli and his wife Rose live next door with the Gallos at 2460 Hughes. Giuseppe is 25 and Rosa is 22. He says he arrived in 1907 and has filed papers. He is a bricklayer in the ‘house building’ industry. She is an operator in the children’s dresses industry. Giuseppe and his parents-in-law are the only ones who can’t speak English. Giovanni’s sister and her family live a couple streets over.

In 1940, he lived with his wife and children in Orangetown Township (Tappan), Rockland County, New York. He owned the house, valued at $6,500, and had lived there in 1935 as well. He was 55, a naturalized citizen, and had a 5th grade education. He worked as a bricklayer in apartment houses, earning $1,800. Rose, who also had a 5th grade education, was 47 and naturalized. Joseph, 29, had an 8th grade education and had been unemployed for 230 weeks, but had another source of income. He had worked as an “electric mechanic” in the signals industry. Alfred, 27, had completed high school. He worked as a pattern cutter in the silk underwear industry, bringing home $1,560. Eugene, 25, was listed as marrried. He had an 8th grade education and worked as a gateman for the railroad, earning $884. Rose, the only child born in New Jersey, was 19 and had finished her junior year of high school. Arthur, 11, had finished the 5th grade. Joseph answered the supplemental questions: His parents were born in Italy, he spoke Italian as his first language, he was not a veteran, he had an SSN and deductions were taken for Old Age Insurance or Railroad Retirement. He worked in the private sector as a bricklayer for buildings and apartments.
