Witnesses to marriage are Laurence Lusitano and Giovanni LaMurla?

In 1910, he’s a piano finisher working at a piano factory. He’s 28 and recently married. Still an alien, he lives with his sister and her family at 2147 Belmont Avenue in the Bronx. He emigrated in 1900.1

On February 8, 1915, the deed to the property at Old Tappan is transferred from the widow Emma F. Sanders to Pasquale Zappala, his brother John, and their cousin Pasquale LaManna for $5,500. Mrs. Sanders lives in South Nyack, Rockland County, NY and Pasquale, John, and Pasquale give their address as 1976 Lexington Avenue in Manhattan. The property is in Harrington Township, Bergen County and includes four lots at 15.310 acres (with a brook called Old Tappan Run), 2 woodlots at 3.757 acres, another lot at 4.4 acres (the same premises sold by Albert F. Haring to Abraham F. Haring in 1884) and another 8.119-acre lot. They paid $800 in cash and $4,400 was mortgaged. 38

He works as a cabinet maker for Kohler and Campbell, 50 St. and 11 Ave, NYC. His nearest relative is his wife Francis. Medium height, medium build, black eyes and hair.39

In 1920, Pasquale Zappala and his brother Giovanni (going by John) were living at 54 Old Tappan Road in a house owned by Pasquale LaManna. Zappala’s relationship to LaManna is defined as cousin. Also living at the LaManna house are LaManna’s wife Rose and their sons Joseph, Anthony, and Biagio; his parents Joseph and Mary; his widowed sister Jennie Militello and her daughters Lillie and Mary; his sister Rosie Visalli with her husband Joseph and their sons Joseph, Alfred, and Eugene; and LaManna’s mother-in-law Grace Meo.40

In 1920, Pasquale Zappala was a piano maker. His cousin Pasquale LaManna, 35, is a marble cutter who lists his date of immigration as 1902. John Zappala is a barber working on his own account. Rosie Visalli is a seamstress and her husband Joseph is a bricklayer. None of the other adults (Joseph and Mary LaManna, Grace Meo, or Jennie Militello) are working. Pasquale Zappala’s wife Frances and children Ada, Marie, and Leo also live there. John Zappala is still single at 42.40

In 1930, he and his immediate family are living in a home he owns at 216 Chestnut Avenue in Bogota. It is valued at $8500. They do not have a radio. Charles is 47, Marie 37, Ada M 19, Marie 16, Leo 14. Marie and Leo ar still in school. Frances was 17, Charles 27 when they married. No college (all), but can read and write English. Frances and Charles emigrated ca 1900, are naturalized. Charles is a mechanic in radio cabineter industry (?), Frances doesn’t work. Ada is a stenographer for News Co (?).45

In 1940, he lived with his family at 216 Chestnut Avenue in Bogota. He owned the house, valued at $7,000, and had lived there in 1935 as well. He is 57, a naturalized citizen, and has an 8th grade education. He works as a presser at a dress factory, earning $520. Frances, 46, is also naturalized and has an 8th grade education, and works as a designer at a dress factory, earning $1,560. Daughter Ada, 28, completed her junior year of high school and earns $1,152 as a statistics clerk at a newspaper distributor. Marie, 25, completed high school and works as a receptionist at a real estate office, but was unemployed in 1939. Son Leo, 24, completed four years of college and is a French teacher in a public school, but was unemployed in 1939. Mother-in-law Marie LaManna, 85, also lives with them. She is naturalized, a widow, and the highest grade completed was 8th.

In 1942, his WWII draft registration listed his birthday as April 3, 1881 and his name as Charles Pasquale Zappala. He is 5’6” and 150 lbs., brown eyes, gray hair, with a slight scar on his chin. He lives at 216 Chestnut in Bogota, telephone HACK 2-3836 W. He is 60, his serial number is 3081, and lists his wife as the person who will always know where he is. He works at G&H Dresses, 122 West 27th St., New York City.46

On death certificate, last address is listed as 78 Queen Anne Road. Occupation is listed as retired furniture finisher for Sears Roebuck.32
